Fall 2005 Bridgeway Newsletter

VOLUNTEER CORNER

By Mary Ann Forman, Director of Volunteers

It's Fall outside and the holidays are approaching even quicker than ever.  Many thanks to those of you who helped this summer with gardening, yard work, and general maintenance of the Bridgeway home.  We were able to provide some vegetables from our own garden for the resident’s meals this summer.  What a treat for young women who may have never before tasted vegetables straight from a garden.

One of the fun events at Bridgeway is the baby showers, put on by volunteers, that happen every other month.  The Rocky Mountain Christian Riders is a special group of women who have volunteered to host several of the baby showers.  They ride motorcycles for fun and share their love of babies with the residents of Bridgeway.  They plan games, provide cakes and punch, and provide a wonderful atmosphere at the baby showers.  We are extremely grateful for this wonderful gift they give to our moms and babies!

We've also had some amazing surprises.  One volunteer, who was expecting her second child, asked her friends to donate her shower gifts to Bridgeway.  We received wonderful items from our wish list as well as from our list at the Babies"R"Us website.  Another surprise came from a young girl, age 7, who decided she wanted her friends and family to donate items to Bridgeway for her birthday, instead of giving gifts to her.  She brought diapers, receiving blankets, shampoos, sleepers, etc., to give to the moms and babies of Bridgeway.  What an amazing young lady!

I had previously expressed a need for a volunteer to assist in the office.  Eve called and volunteered to help on Friday mornings.  She has been amazing!

We would love to utilize your skills and interest as a volunteer.  Our Volunteer Orientation occurs every other month on a Saturday morning.  If you would like to help in any way, please don't hesitate to call us at (303) 969-0515 to find out the date of the next orientation.

Dear Bridgeway Staff,

I would like to thank all of Bridgeway's many helping hands.  Because of cheerful spirits and a warm welcome, my stay at Bridgeway has been a wonderful experience.  I've grown up a lot here with positive role models guiding my way.

I came to Bridgeway with nothing but a broken heart and a confused mind.  I thought there was no hope for my future and I was going to be forced to drop out of school and work at some fast food restaurant.  As soon as I walked in the door of the house, I was greeted with a hug.  That made my day!  As time went on, I learned so much about life and the choices that were heading towards me.  There were people everywhere that I could talk to.  I felt accepted and cared about; not rejected because of being pregnant.

Bridgeway has helped me more toward my goal of finishing school and being a successful new mom.  Without Bridgeway by my side, I would have been lost.  I feel I have grown up to be a young adult who has learned to always look ahead.  Bridgeway has taught me that there will be bumps in the road, but there will be a rainbow at the end.

Thanks, Bridgeway, for helping me grow and loving my son like your own.  I love you guys!

Sincerely,

A Bridgeway Resident and Baby

Christmas is coming and we have another volunteer opportunity!  The Knights of Columbus have graciously offered to host our annual Christmas Party for all current and former Bridgeway residents.  We typically have 200-250 moms and kids in attendance.  A special thanks to Dot and Tom Malone for helping us with the arrangements, food and gifts.  They have supported us for many years and we are very blessed to have them.

We can still use some volunteers to help wrap presents and make goodies!  Please contact Jaime Armbruster at the Bridgeway offices.
