REACH OUT AND BECOME A BRIDGER!

By Dee
Bridger Coordinator

Hello Everyone!   This is Dee, the Bridger Coordinator.   One specialized area of volunteer service to Bridgeway is the Bridger Program.   If you are at least 23 years old and have some consistent time to be a friend to a resident, the Bridger Program can offer many things to you in return.   If you want to experience what it's like to be a best friend, a mentor, or a big sister, talk to me about becoming a Bridger.

The most important goal for the program is that each resident leaves Bridgeway with a friend for life.   Being a former resident and still having a relationship with my Bridger, who I consider a good friend now, I know first hand how important this program was for me.   It can be rewarding for all involved.

Here is an example of a former resident and her experience with her Bridger.   Being a Bridger can be challenging, but, in the end, it's about friendship.

"I remember the worst thing about being pregnant was that I was without a home and so would be my newborn baby.

I found Bridgeway when I was about four months along.   I was scared and could not believe that my life had come to this.   I remember the overwhelming feeling of being alone.   I felt embarrassed and like I was a failure.   Through Bridgeway I was able to build myself up again.

My son was about four months old when we met our "angel" at Bridgeway.   She was the most caring and easy person to talk to that I have ever met.   She brought us dinner one night, and I remember thinking, "Thank God I don't have to cook tonight."   It was not only generous but it was delicious, too.

I felt an immediate connection to her, and after meeting her once, she became my Bridger.

She fell in love with my son and became my best friend and confidant.   She brought treats from the market where she worked and would call me several times a week.   We both had full-time jobs, but we always found time to hang out, talk on the phone or take my son for a walk.

Having her as a Bridger let me make a connection on the human level that I so desperately needed and wanted.   The connection we made will last a lifetime."
