Winter 2006 Bridgeway Newsletter

Volunteer Corner

By Mary Ann Forman, Director of Volunteers

Happy New Year!  I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season and are enjoying the new year and all it brings to you.

Our volunteers worked overtime to provide a wonderful Christmas for our current and former residents, and their children.  It took numerous volunteers to organize and wrap gifts, while others brought food, and still others set up the room for the annual Christmas party.  Whew!  The list goes on and on.

WWe at Bridgeway truly appreciate the time, energy, and talents that all of you have shared with us.

The Knights of Columbus once again supplied the hall, additional food, and volunteers for serving, set-up, and clean up.  Their group added to the festive atmosphere.  Everyone who attended talked about how wonderful everything was!  The glow from the love and happiness carried us all home and kept us warm for days. We're looking for volunteers to work our fundraiser on February 10th.  Please call if you can help.

The party at the Bridgeway House for the current residents was equally as fun with a wonderful dinner provided once again by the ladies from the Zonta Club of Lakewood-Golden.  Thanks also go to some very special "Secret Santas" for providing huge baskets full of amazing gifts and gift cards.  The residents of Bridgeway feel very cared for by all of these volunteers who go out of their way to help make Christmas special for them.

As you have read elsewhere in the newsletter, we are busily getting ready for the fundraiser on February 10th.  We would be happy to add you to our list of volunteers assisting with this event--either before the event or on the day of the event.  Please call the office at (303) 969-0515 and let us know if you would like to help.

There will be a volunteer orientation on January 14, 2006.  If you would like to become more involved, please call the office and let us know the area of your interest.

Bridgeway Success Story

Thanks to everyone who so generously helped Theresa (a past Bridgeway resident) get where she is now.  Here is an update.  She has been at the University of Massachusetts for two years.  She is now a senior and was accepted into an internship in Costa Rica for the fall semester.  She will be learning medical and health-related Spanish while completing her internship in a rural clinic and working with a public health organization.  Since Theresa plans to attend medical school, this will allow her to gain valuable experience.

In the Spring, she will take the medical school admission test and defend her honors thesis (she is studying a mouse-model of muscular dystrophy and the effects of two genes in slowing muscle death).  Theresa will graduate Summa Cum Laude from the honors college, having maintained a 4.0 GPA while taking honors and graduate level neuroscience courses.

Since Theresa will leave UMASS with her B.S. in May 2006 as well as her Master’s of Neuroscience (May 2007), she plans to pursue research as well as clinical studies while in medical school.  She is very interested in neuroscience research into the mechanisms of SIDS (having lost her own son, Cody, to SIDS) as well as child psychiatry.

All our love and prayers go out to everyone.  We know you have Theresa in your hearts.
